Rapid Ohia Death is a newly identified fungal disease that is killing the ohia tree, Hawaii's most abundant, native tree.
The ohia tree is critical to the ecology of Hawaii and the progression of Rapid Ohia Death will have far-reaching ramifications as the ohia tree accounts for 50% of all native and non-native trees in Hawaii. Consequently, many other species of animals and plants on the Hawaiian islands are dependent upon the ohia tree for their survival. Two (2) species of plant pathogens are responsible for Rapid Ohia Death: Ceratocystis lukuohia and Ceratocystis huliohia. Ceratocystis lukuohia infects the wounds of the ohia tree causing a vascular wilt, whereas, Ceratocystis huliohia causes cankers that serve to girdle the ohia tree leading to eventual death.
